Clash Over Compensation Battle |
A
Cheadle Hulme Solicitor is at odds with Irish Counterparts over claims
for compensation claims for victims of care home abuse.
The Irish Government set up the Redress Boards last year, allowing abuse
victims who emigrated overseas, including thousands who moved to Greater
Manchester and other parts of the North West, to get a compensation
payout mainly funded by the Catholic Church.
This made it possible for people who moved to England, America or
Australia after suffering abuse in the church-run homes as childern to
make compensation claims without contacting lawyers in Ireland or going
through the country's courts.
But Peter Garsden, whose firm Abney Garsden McDonald has been dealing
with dozens of traumatised abuse survivors said his firm had received
hostile letters from Irish lawyers telling him he had no right to
get involved in their country's system.
But Mr. Garsden, who believes there are about 12,000 Irish
survivors of care home abuse living in England said: "As far as I'm
concerned I want to work with the Irish Lawyers. These cases are far too
sensitive to be waging wars over. These people aren't commodities,
they're very damaged people that need sensitive handling. To embark on
this kind of argument is totall wrong.
The Irish solicitors say we don't understand the culture and don't
understand what's going on over there. If these cases had to be fought
in Irish courts then there'd be no question but because it's an
international forum it's got its own rules and anyone can put in a
claim.
Sally Mulready, who works for a UK based organisation representing
victims of Irish abuse, and who helped set up theee original agreement
with the Irish government, said: "The Redress Act is a very
straight forward scheme and any decent solicitor who reads the Act will
be able to follow it. You don't have to Irish or Irish
based." |

Children's Homes Cut Off Date Looms |
| Any person who
was abused whilst resident in a Children's Home managed by Manchester
City Council has until 14th November 2003 4pm to lodge their claim at
Manchester High Court. From statistics available there could be between
350 and 1000 further victims who have still not come forward. The
theoretical compensation payout could run into millions of pounds. The
homes presently in the group are Rosehill, Broomehouse, Lynwood,
Mobberley, Ellerslie, and Seymour Rd. Further homes may however be
added. See articles that have appeared in the Manchester
Evening News and Metro,

Well she made it!
Her training
took many varied routes and distances culminating in a 10 mile run prior
to embarking on the 13.1 miles that is the Great Northern Run. It
was a breeze she said. "I owe it all to the crowd. They were
great. The course is long and hard
with many hills throughout the distance. However once you cross over the
finishing line all that is forgotten and you are just grateful to have
made it in one piece. Who knows I might be that forgetful that I compete
again next year…” So if you sponsored Yvonne for the Great Northern Run, get
out your savings and stump up. It's all in a good cause. In total
once everyone has paid she will have raised well over £200, an exact
figure won’t be know until all donations have been received. Yvonne pictured here in reception next to our Investor in

Great Northern Run Sponsorship for Yvonne
Donlon
|
|
Yvonne Donlan a Paralegal in our Child
Abuse Department said an a recent email to all staff,
"As some of you already know I am participating in this years
Great Northern Run which is scheduled to take place on Sunday 21st September 2003 from Newcastle to South Shields and will cover a distance of 13 miles.
I am taking part in this race on behalf of the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow
Trust. The trust, is a registered charity (number 803716), which provides bone marrow donors for patients suffering from leukaemia and other bone marrow related diseases. They have to rely solely on charity/sponsorship to continue and expand their life saving work, as they receive no Government or lottery funding.
I am not one of nature’s natural runners so this is also a bit of personal crusade.
I would greatly appreciate any sponsorship or support that anyone can offer.
Please pass on my plea/this email to others that know me who also have a generous side (that sort of limits the amount of people I know!). If anyone would like to offer their support on the day and see a bedraggled beetroot (me) cross the finishing line that would also be greatly appreciated.
If you are interested and want to sponsor me please let me know by return email or phone/letter, once the run is over I will call in all of your offers.
Thank you all very much"
If therefore you want to sponsor Yvonne
why not email her. Abney Garsden
McDonald will be contributing to Yvonne's sponsorship money.
