We have listed below some of the most common cycling accidents.

COMMON CYCLING ACCIDENTS

  • Child cyclist playing or riding too fast
  • Cyclist and motorist going straight ahead
  • Cyclist turning right from a major road and from a minor road
  • Motorist emerging into path of cyclist
  • Motorist turning across path of cyclist
  • Cyclist riding into the path of a motor vehicle, often riding off a pavement
  • Cyclist overtaking

Sometimes cyclists are partly to blame for the accident, but they can still bring a claim provided the driver was partly at fault. Examples of cyclist errors that can contribute to accidents:

  • Undertaking or overtaking at a junction in a line of slow moving traffic
  • Ignoring red traffic lights or dodging round the lights by riding on the pavement
  • Wearing dark clothing without reflector materials
  • Riding two abreast when the road is too narrow
  • Failing to signal clearly

OUR FIRM'S COMMITMENT TO CYCLING AND THE ENVIRONMENT

The Environment

We have recently introduced a cycle to work scheme to encourage the staff at Abney Garsden McDonald to leave their cars at home and cycle to work. The scheme involves the firm purchasing a bike on the staff’s behalf and then hiring it back to them tax-free. To find out more about the Cycle to Work scheme from the Department of Transport click here.
