£3M grant announced to provide cycle training for 80,000 children (17 March 2008, Department For Transport press release).

Transport Minister Rosie Winterton today announced that over £3m would be dedicated to providing cycle training to
nearly 80,000 school children by March 2009. This funding is part of the record £140m package announced in January,
which will give up to half a million ten to eleven year olds cycle training by 2012. Click here to read the full story.

CYCLING ACCIDENT STATISTICS

According to figures published by the Department for Transport in 2005 Pedal cyclist casualties fell from 16,648 in 2004 to 16,561, a drop of 1 per cent. The number of cyclists killed or seriously injured rose by 2 per cent overall to 2,360, and the number of fatalities increased 10 per cent from 134 to 148. The overall pedal cyclist casualty rates per hundred million vehicle kilometres have fallen by 6 percent compared to 2004.
