One of the UK’s leading experts on child abuse, Manchester based Peter Garsden, today welcomed the announcement that the Healthcare Commission is to investigate the care of people with learning disabilities across England.

It follows allegations of abuse at a hospital in the Cornwall Partnership NHS Trust. The Healthcare Commission is in the early stages of an investigation and said there had been “significant failings” within the trust.

Peter Garsden, whose company represents child abuse victims across the UK, said “ It does not surprise me that a national investigation into the abuse of the disabled has been announced because of their vulnerability and inability to give evidence. I wholeheartedly support the call for a root and branch investigation on behalf of the most disadvantaged members of our society.”
