It opened on 16th December 2002 Abney Garsden McDonald solicitors - the sponsors of this site. A firm of solicitors in Cheadle Hulme South Manchester with the largest dedicated specialised Child abuse department in the country. They are hoping to co-ordinate all the English solicitors involved in the Irish Claims. Established in 1985 the firm also caters for local people's legal needs. Peter Garsden, a partner in the firm heads the child abuse department. He is a founder member of ACAL (Association of Child Abuse Lawyers) a national organisation dedicated to ensuring a consistent standard of client care in this very sensitive area of the law. Irish Child Abuse Commission - many useful pieces of information about the Commission with user friendly guides for all categories of people who may use the Commission. An essential starting point. ACAL (Association of Child Abuse Lawyers) - a national English based association of personal injury compensation lawyers who specialise in claims of all types of abuse. They bridge the gap between the survivor and professional empathetic legal assistance. Peter Garsden, the author of this site was one of the founder members in 1997. Paddy Doyle - a site created by a survivor of abuse with extracts from many child abuse stories from the Newspapers, as well as commentary. Department of Education and Science - responsible for the Redress Board scheme. In particular any change of statute or regulation is their responsibility such as adding new institutions to the scheme. House of Oireachtas - the venue for the process of government. It is equivalent to the English House of Parliament. Here there is published all Bills and Acts. A copy of the Residential Institutions Redress Act, 2002 can be downloaded in PDF file format from here. A search of the site using the key words "child abuse produces interesting material Irish Times - use the search facility and look for references to child abuse to find many interesting stories worthy of a read. Irish Independent - the official site of the Irish Independent Newspaper. Irish Examiner - another Irish Newspaper with an archive search facility that enables you to search back for stories on child abuse should you so wish. The Irish Post - a newspaper aimed at Irish people living abroad. A lot of the site is free, but to see a lot of material it is necessary to become a member of the "Irish Circle" The Garda - needs no introduction we think. Irish Government Site - links and full of information The London Irish Centre - a wealth of information for Irish people living in London and elsewhere - they say " For the past 47 years the London Irish Centre has been providing Advice, Accommodation, Training, Employment and a range of Cultural Experiences and Learning facilities for successive generations of Irish people. For over 17 years our Missing Persons Service has sought to locate lost relatives of Irish people throughout Britain." Training for professionals working with survivors of sexual violence.
Awareness raising on prevention of harassment and sexual harassment in the
workplace. Educational programmes on other aspects of sexual abuse. 24
hour crisis helpline and counselling for all survivors of abuse or rape
over 16. Group work. Cork
Rape Crisis Centre - Information,
support, counselling, group work and outreach for all survivors of rape, assault
and child sexual abuse over 13. Suitable venues arranged for people with
disabilities. The
CARI (Children at Risk in Ireland) Foundation
- Therapy and counselling for children and young people up to 18 years who have
been abused. Telephone support for anyone with concerns about child sexual
abuse. Helpline information and support service for anyone with concerns about
child sexual abuse. Crisis counselling service for families and ongoing support
where necessary for the child or young person's development. Missing Persons Ireland - a site cram packed with all sorts of articles on all sorts of subjects but concentrating on anti-Satanic messages, child abuse in the Catholic Church, and other interesting stories on people disappearing mysteriously in suspicious circumstances. You will never tire of surfing this one. Right of Place - a support group based in Cork, Eire founded in 1999 - to quote their site "The first ever meeting of former residents of St. Patrick's Upton was convened in St. Vincent's hall in Sundays Well. A Committee was democratically elected and charged with the responsibility to inform both the Government and Religious of the serious abuses, physical, mental and sexual which were perpetrated on our members when they were residents in the Industrial School System." Much encouraging and enthusiastic information on the site. Ken Doyle's Site - a survivor site which tells the personal story of Ken Doyle the victim of abuse. Accompanied by pictures the story is told honestly and without leaving any stone unturned. The best way to explore it is to read the contents for yourself. Survivors
Northern Ireland - their helpline opened 24th September on Wednesdays
from 8pm to 10pm. They say "SURVIVORS Northern Ireland was set up
in 2001 and aims to provide information and support to ADULT MALE survivors
of sexual abuse and rape. Stop It Now - Stop it Now! UK & Ireland is a major national and local campaign that aims to stop child sexual abuse by encouraging abusers and potential abusers to seek help and by giving adults the information they need to protect children effectively. Stop it Now! has a national helpline 0808 1000 900 - Some good information laid out professionally Irish Survivors - this excellent site provides primarily a tracing service for survivors of abuse from the Irish Institutions. It also provides information on the following issues: The Redress Scheme,Support services such as counselling and the Outreach Service;The Education Trust and access to Learning; Welfare benefits and special needs trusts;Returning to Ireland; Social Housing (UK) and Ireland; Derek Leinster - Derek Leinster is a survivor & author. He has written several books including "Hannah's Shame", which is the inspirational story of one boy's Irish childhood spent in poverty because of the neglect of the Church of Ireland, of his lifelong search for who he is and of his fight for justice Abandoned by his birth mother in a Children's Home where illness, hunger and neglect were common-place, fostered by an inordinately poor family and then living in poverty but ignored by the well-to-do community in which he was brought up, this is a story that will touch your heart. It is a story of shame.
