| Child abuse lawyers to launch website for the elderly (August 20, 2007) |
Leading child abuse solicitors Abney Garsden McDonald are launching a new website aimed at helping the families of elderly people affected
by abuse. It will supplement their recently introduced website, www.abuselaw.co.uk which was launched to provide easy access to information for child and
adult survivors of physical, sexual and psychological abuse. The launch of this new site coincides with recent condemnation from MPs and peers about elderly abuse. Peter Garsden, Managing Partner at Abney Garsden McDonald said, "It is a sad and shocking fact that older people sometimes experience abuse or neglect at the hands of those charged with their care. Our new website provides a valuable resource for those who have to deal with this all too common appalling situation." According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, 500,000 people are believed to be abused at any one time in the UK. Based on analysis of calls to the Action on Elder Abuse help line 78 per cent of abuse is perpetrated against people who are over the age of 70, with 16 per cent of that abuse affecting people over the age of 90. The firm plan to go live with the new site within the next month.
